You Can't Photoshop Life

It is time to change our emotional reaction within our consciousness. Letting go of judgement, pain, and frustration helps us to remember our radiance – when we feel wholly connected to life. We are being forced to see the light within us.

In our modern digital world, it is so easy for us to feel inadequate when we scroll through social media – beautiful family vacations, candlelit dinners, fine wines, perfect photos of rosy cheeks. Of course, we want others to see our best moments, and many times, if we are honest with ourselves, we prefer the safety and comfort of this smiling version of life.

But real life, real emotion, and real connection are not photoshopped or staged.

The most powerful moments between people are often messy, painful, and intense. As a therapist, I get the honor (and it is an honor) of seeing people without the emotional airbrushing that we often want to present to the world. I see pain, struggle, and conflict, of course, but I also see and experience love and connection that is beyond measure.

Life is unpredictable

Things might not always work out the way we want them to, but that’s no reason to give up. I believe we’re here for a reason and someday when you’re not expecting it, you’re going to discover your reason for being here.  And when that does happen, your life will never be the same again.

These last few years, I have seen in spades what connection looks like. What it means to listen, love, joke, pray, lose sleep, feel helpless, experience despair, and somehow keep going.

People very important to me have reminded me in the past and more recently to “just show up.” Despite all sorts of training, education, theories, and strategies, sometimes this is all we can and need to do.

We were born to be REAL, nor perfect.

There’s no point in constantly worrying about everything. What will happen will happen regardless.

So breathe, look on the bright side. Have some laughs, fall in love, accept what you can’t change, and carry on and on and on and on…
